Hi

I have been taking mtx for 8 weeks now and I have realised (from other peoples responses) that its early days. but I do have a question I would like to ask, too see if anybody has experienced the same as myself, I have increased the dosage each fortnight as directed, but the day after taking it the pain and swelling seems to go worse, (which is already bad enough) this lasts for a couple of days, then due to this I am exhausted for another couple of days, by Monday although I am still experiencing pain it has eased off a touch, but one more day and I take my next dose and I am back to square one! is this normal, I mentioned this yesterday when I had my bloods taken, and they said a nurse would be in touch, just wondering if this is the norm, or should I pursue thisSad

fed up!!!

Hi John

I have taken mxt for 9 years and haven't experienced this so I can't help you I'm afraid . I hope your rheummy nurse rings soon and she/he will be able to help you. I know we all want to hear what others have experienced because hearing that someone else has had the same problems makes us feel better and that is what the forum is all about. There will be someone on here who has experienced the same I am sure. I hope you are feeling better soon.

Hi John,

I haven't had this problem with mtx either. Hopefully the nurse will get in touch with you but if not, do you have a number for the nurse helpline?
Hope you feel better soon.

Hi John,

Are you taking Folic Acid to relieve the symptoms of side effects? I take Folic acid every day except the day I am taking MTX. When I was seen in Huddersfield Royal Infirmary they only said take Folic Acid once a week but then when I moved to MSK in Oldham they changed it to daily and I felt so much better.

Just a thought.

Hello John,
Sorry the MTX is making you feel so bad. I remember the MTX 'hangover' very well and still get it sometimes, it seems to relate to how well I feel in myself when I take it. On the long list of side effects it does say something like joint & muscle pain as well as fatigue! I'm 12 months in and its working so I have to be grateful for that. But I've been on antibiotics the last couple of weeks so had to stop the MTX. When I stopped taking it the side effects really hit home, you sort of get to learn to live with them, but I know that without the MTX I'm leaving myself open to more joint damage and so its worth it. Unfortunately all of these drugs are a cost/benefit analysis and you need to weigh those up with your healthcare team to find the best for you. Its still early days so hold on in there John, it could well change your life for the better.
Take care
Sara
